Fall Run Margaree Salmon

The weather here the last 2 weeks was perfect but not so great for salmon fishing. The water was low most places. I took my friend down to an unfished pool on a local river that runs though my land. No water, no salmon then, but rain since has local rivers in perfect shape. He did report seeing one in the 25 lb class in a nearby river. I have never spent time on salmon. I didn’t like the crowds much and fall was a hunting time. I caught a summer grilse in the Margaree once while trout fishing but that was it. The sea run brook trout there to 6 lbs interest me, more than the salmon, but I haven’t done that either.

I used to compulsively fish but have given it up for the most part but, as can be seen here, I still think about it.

“Proud dad moment tonight! Did it all herself. Had to dig her heels in deep to win this battle 40″ 24 pounds.”

This turned up today.

As big as my best in MA when I fished bass there for 10 years. Time to rethink my adversion to fishing the bay?

The rip in front of my brothers cottage, just 2 years ago. When the tide is running out against the wind these rips can form. I was surprised at how dramatic it can be. There can be 20 people fishing there which isn’t my preference. That, and the muddy water you can’t see an inch in, never appealed to much to me after MA. Before we left, a guy brought up the two nice ones in the 30 to 35 inch class.

Bass have greatly increased here. When I was a kid I used to bug dad for bass stories at this spot and elsewhere. At the time it was mostly stories, but in the last 20 years, the bass have returned in a big way. They are even reported in Labrador now, which was unheard of before, and is a likely sign of warming waters and climate.

Pinks aka Humpies from Hell

Much has changed. Pink salmon are flooding into the Atlantic from released ones in Russia. They have been found in Britain, Newfoundland, etc. E Donnall Thomas wrote a story on them called Humpies from Hell and he was more right than wrong.

The biggest change has been the web. Before the internet there was no local info. Now I see fishing results I didn’t think were possible here.
