Meta with Mixed Messaging

Steve added a quote a while back that reminded me of this sign. I felt you do not have to be in Nevada to run into that sentiment.

I had a camera way back on the ridge in Sept and on the way out I saw this sign. There is a hard to describe community up there with about 40 lots of mostly cabins\”camps”*\temporary lodgings but some are year round permanent residences that could be in town. It is not far from my place but I rarely go up there.

The Larson cartoon summarizes the reaction to the sign. With the stories my friends and I tell of the local crazies we have met, the potential of this sign was unlimited.

It is a great example of meta advertising where the sign itself validates the message or as Marshall McLuhan said, “The medium is the message.”

There was a bit of confusion with this sign a few feet away. I didn’t knock on the door to clear it up.

Lovell’s Frozen Companion

You can sort of see the evolution of the sign’s origin, however. After a winter of 3-4 feet of snow, five miles back in the woods, an iffy run out on a privately maintained road in all kinds of weather, then another 10 to groceries, by spring the shack nasties begin to take their toll. Add a few feuds, here and there, and you are likely to end up like this guy holding long winded conversations with a corpse and a dog. As they say, “You check in but you don’t check out.”

*camp = cabin here.
