500,000 Broad Wings

A report from Karl Bardon

I’ve been counting the raptor migration in Panama for the last month, and today was one of the most amazing days I have ever experienced: over half a million Broad-winged Hawks in one day! Hurricane Julia held migration back for a week and the result was a perfect storm of birds. This brings our seasonal total to over 2.2 million raptors. You can follow the counts at www.hawkcount.org. Thanks to Adopta Bosque, we have three count sites in Bocas del Toro, including Valle de Agua where these birds were seen. And thanks to Cesar Romero for hosting me at Bocas Ridge Hotel and Residences for my third season!😊

In the data summary it seems it was the 11th when they peaked with 500,000 broad wings.

I tried to find the video off facebook but no luck. I had to settle for the screenshot above. It is always frustrating when video is on Facebook since the WordPress paywall has to be paid for sharing it here. It didn’t used to the case before 2019 unless I am wrong in which case someone let us now.
