The second shot that made the final round of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. While I did not win this year, being in the top 8% around the World is pretty cool. Peregrine Falcon protecting the nest and giving the Pelican a little reminder. With over 60,000 entries making the final I am super thrilled. Hard to say who is grabbing who here. I have seen lots of pix of pelicans beaking or trying to swallow critters way too big for them, including a child’s head.
This peregrine falcon was raising her young on a cliff. She was very protective during this time. Anything that came too close to her nest risked being met with a fierce attack. It was amazing how she could take on something so much bigger than herself, like this brown pelican.
