I saw this pic and thought, Wow. I first heard of the Mexican Sierra Gorda mountains in a book by Scott Weidensaul. I have been intrigued ever since with its mix of biodiversity and beauty. It has a fantastic number of ecosystems crammed into a small area. It also has a lot of species trapped there after the ice ages one would expect to see in the eastern US, or Canada, like beech and maple trees. There is also some serious terrain there as can be seen. It is on my wish list.
In a large part of the Sierra Gorda you will come across works of art by Edward James. This artist grew up in Great Britain, but moved to Mexico when he was thirty. Inspired by European surrealist artists, the impressive landscape and perhaps some narcotics, he created an impressive maze of bizarre works of art.
The article is an ad but the above made me laugh. I looked up some off his paintings and they look like movie sets for the elves in Lord of the Rings.
