A friend of mine had a couple of pack goats and absolutely loved them.
I’d prefer pack mules myself.
Dutch Salmon used pack goats in the Gila,and wrote about them admiringly.

I wish I could tell you, but I read most of his books around 20 years ago, and just don’t remember the details.
Steve’s friend and neighbor Omar used to do long goat-packing trips in the Gila. I believe they’re not allowed everywhere out of concern for disease transmission to bighorns, so the llama people may have access to more country around the West than the goat people.
