This US Creek Was Dying — Then a Physicist Used Rocks to Bring the Water Back
In Silver City, New Mexico, a dying desert creek had spent more than a century cutting deeper into the landscape while groundwater beneath the region continued to decline. Then physicist Van Clothier began using native rocks, water-harvesting structures, willows, and cottonwoods to do something conventional engineering had struggled to achieve: slow the water and let the creek begin rebuilding itself.
This documentary explores the restoration of San Vicente Creek and the ideas behind Clothier’s Stream Dynamics approach. Instead of fighting flash floods with concrete, Clothier and former U.S. Forest Service hydrologist Bill Zeedyk developed low-tech methods including cross-vanes, Zuni bowls, induced meandering, rock structures, and water-harvesting basins designed to dissipate water energy, stop channel incision, capture sediment, reconnect floodplains, and increase infiltration.
The transformation became visible after volunteers planted 175 native plants representing 32 species along the restored banks. Ninety percent survived the first season. Years later, willows planted as bare stakes had become trees, cottonwoods had thickened, and soils that were once bone-dry remained moist for weeks after monsoon rains.
The project faced its ultimate test during a 2014 New Mexico flash flood. The restored banks held while untreated sections downstream continued eroding. Later research from the U.S. Geological Survey documented broader evidence that similar rock detention structures can increase infiltration, sediment capture, native vegetation, and water storage—although deep groundwater recharge varies significantly by location.
