50 Ripleys at the 2022 Copley Auction
A couple of nice Ripley’s at auction soon. Ripley was based in the Boston area and painted a lot of iconic hunting images in his day. These two were likely studies for more final paintings. Ripley did a lot of that. The top image is likely a study for a print I have. See lot 547 in the Copley Auction. Ripley painted himself into a lot of his paintings. The central figure in the top one looks like him. The other guy may have been a friend of Ripley’s that hunted with him. I talked to him, name forgotten, with a friend when I was down in MA. Surprisingly, he didn’t have as much info as I expected but it had been a long time since Ripley’s passing.
Catching up after not viewing your site for a while. A couple Ripleys are two of my favorites: “A Perfect Day” which reminds me of a spot I used to hunt with my dad, and “Start of the Season” which looks nearly exactly like a favorite pheasant draw which was recently plowed over. I have a cheap print of each in my study.
Yes, those Brown and Bigelow prints were of their time but still nice to have. His drypoints are nice, too. Some of the Frost and Reed prints are still great. I have the Woodcock Cover and Grouse Cover ones. The Turkey Blind one is very impressive. Lots of light and detail.
