Arizona is known as the Grand Canyon State but another geological feature defines us. The Mogollon Rim slashes across the mid-section of the state like a great humped spine and rises 2,000-feet in a vertical thrust from desert floor to high pine forests. Those wildly differing habitats, the low and the high, the warm and the cool, in such close proximity is THE story of Arizona. That’s our essence! People think we are a desert state but the key is our desert is framed by mountains. There is a harmony and balance in Arizona that’s seldom found elsewhere. It’s one of the things that make this a truly special place. Stand atop the Rim and you understand. From here you’re teetering on a shoreline of sky and space. These are edge-of-the-world views. Waves of soft hills roll off into the distance, thousands of feet below. Meanwhile, you’re alone with a vast slice of sky, and your own beating heart. The Mogollon Rim feels like heaven’s porch.
A nice comment about the Mogollon by Roger Naylor. Steve likely feels the same about New Mexico and its sky islands.
Naylor also has a book that mentions the Mogollon Monster, better known as Bigfoot. Chas Chiflton, friend of the blog, has a good six part riff on bigfoot around his Colorado area which has a mysterious angle someone here may be able to explain.
