
Unangax/Aleut hunter, Ivan Suvorov wearing a gut parka with a large harpoon, Umnak Island, Aleutian Islands, Alaska in 1909. The visor is called a Chagudax, and was worn when hunting for seafood/sea residing animals on kayaks. It was in fact to block the sunlight (as well as the bright light reflecting from snow) and was decorated to refer to social status. I haven’t looked for it but I wonder how much was functional vs show. The do-dads on the hat, in particular.
