Bruno Liljefors (Swedish painter, 1860-1939), Swans (Svanar vid strandkanten), 1920, 50 x 60 cm, private collection.

Liljefors is perhaps the most influential Swedish wildlife painter when wildlife art was still emerging from its association with scientific depiction and taxidermy. Liljefors also set a standard of identification with the landscape that substantially influenced the development of wildlife art in the 20th century; he loved nature and was so fond of animal motifs to the point of amassing a huge collection of animals to act as his living models. I love how he depicts the intensity of the watching swan.
