Cormorant and Whale Shark

This was quite interesting. There are so many cameras now that rare things are being seen. This Cormorant pulling remoras off  a Whale Shark qualifies. Cormorants are despised here for the usual stupid human reasons. They are not brightly colored or attractive and their nesting sites smell. They get blamed for eating too many trout and salmon. It goes on.

There used to be, or still is, an artisanal fishery in Asia where they used cormorants to catch fish.  A ring around their neck would prevent them from swallowing a catch so the owner could get it. It was described in A Sporting Chance: Unusual methods of hunting, by Daniel Pratt Mannix, a book in Steve’s A Sportsman’s Library.

So an interesting bird, to those that can see it, and a useful one to some Whale sharks included. The next question is does the shark seek out cormorants for cleaning?
