175cm COD..my fish carving. Cherniakov Oleg
It is big. As long as me.

Daniel Pipe from Wales recently had one of the largest (and longest) cod ever caught on a rod, just a few hundred grams short of the current world record. What makes the catch remarkable is, of course, that the fish was caught in the summer and not during the spawning migration in winter and spring. It is therefore likely to be by far the largest summer cod ever caught. Daniel had the huge cod outside Sandland Brygge at Alta in northernmost Norway and it was recorded at a whopping 160 cm and 46.6 kilos. The giant fell for a softlure and was tamed with a Westin 20-30 lbs W4 Boat rod after a heavy 20-minute fight from 50 meters depth. We congratulate Daniel on a fantastic fish! Westin-Fishing
Seeing the carving reminded of MA. While there I talked with a sporting art guy about the old cod and other fish models atop weathervanes. He told me their value was off the scale at one point and they were using helicopters to rip them right off the weathervanes on buildings, etc.
I am also reminded of being on the Prince, a research vessel, and we stopped briefly to lower cod jigs on Browns Bank. I hooked one about 25 lbs and it was memorable.

I always liked the sense of anticipation this cover evoked.
