This scene is so familiar to me with the snow covered conifer, surprise encounters and instant excitement. I never had one head in my direction this close but I have had several very close. The last buck I shot passed in front of me a few feet away. We were in the same area I had seen the target buck the day before and stupidly messed up. There was likely a hot doe he was tending and this was a satellite buck. He popped out of the brush about 15 yards to my right. I shot fast because I was kicking myself for the missed chance on the target buck the day before. I shot again as he passed broadside 5-10 yards away and he piled up within sight. Doug, my hunting partner, at the time saw it all behind me and loved it. It wasn’t the target buck or anything close to him but it was a good hunt.
I saw Doug a couple of weeks ago. He is in a wheelchair all day now and droops his head. His wife can still understand his speech but I can’t.
