Sight fishing Juvenile Black Marlin

How Good Is Hervey Bay. There is no other location on the planet where you can sightfish to juvenile black marlin on gin-clear flats in only a few metres of water Fishing With Scotto is in Hervey Bay, QLD, Australia.

This is news to me. I never heard of marlin in such swallow water before. This would drive people nuts to fish them.

An example of why it would drive them nuts. Marlin put on quite a show. This one is foul hooked but It still shows their capabilities.

I’m often asked, what’s the biggest fish I have ever seen… well time for some history!
This photo was taken in 1990 when I was a deckie on the game boats out of Cairns and Lizard Island. I was working for Calvin Tilley on SEADUCER and training a new deckie at the time. This was only the start of the season, and I was showing the deckie how big we sometimes troll our baits so I rigged a 17kg Spaniard and put 3 more rubber bands over the outrigger peg… just showin’ off I suppose haha.
BUT, what happened when I put it out will stay with all of us who saw it for a life time. After only a half hour fight, I had it on the wire for around 5 minutes and my hands felt like they had been through a blender, even wore through the reinforced leather gloves. The 16/0 hook eventually straightened and off she went. As it turned out, the deckie dropped the gaff and walked back inside, just after this pic was taken, as it was a pretty intimidating sight for a newbie to the game. I had previously seen a few nice fish around 1200 pound up there, but this was substantially larger and had a giant bump on her head.
You don’t really know how big some of these fish are until you encounter something like that fish. I will try and find some more pics and post them up. If you look hard, you will see the tail of a 36lb Spaniard in the corner of its mouth. Ryan Moody Fishing
