The Season, Kenny Morgan books

Turkey season is on, at least, in parts of the range and while I have not hunted them I have seen a few and read much about it. Friends from here used to go to Maine for them. They are making there way here but I may not see it in my lifetime.
The Season, Tom’s 4th book and one of his most popular, has been out of print for several years.
In honor of the 30th anniversary of its writing, we have reprinted The Season, which chronicles an unforgettable turkey season for the Colonel. Kirkus Reviews originally described it as, “A genuine love song to outdoorsmanship as sharp-eyed, bawdy, and unbridled as a gobbler in full strut.” Tom Kelly, Inc.

A taste of The Season.
Notice what he says about being 4 and playing with his uncle a civil war veteran. Kelly is still hale and will be 98 in May. A living memory to 160 years ago. The past is not that past.
For three decades, The Season has captivated hunters and storytellers alike. Famed outdoor writer Stephen Bodio put it best:
“I thought there could never be a better book about turkey hunting than Tom Kelly’s Tenth Legion. But now there is, and Tom Kelly has written it. The Season features Kelly’s patented dry humor and sharp-eyed observation, seasoned by time and hard-earned wisdom. Read it.”
Celebrate the 30th anniversary with a special edition copy—because legends only get better with time. Tom Kelly, Inc.

I had this post prepared but mid March I saw this reference to it and Steve. He blurbed it way back when for Lyons Press books. A bit of synchronicity.

The Kelly book reminds me of the more recent turkey book above. A book friend in the states sent me a copy. I knew of Morgan as his 1st book is a minor classic but I had not seen it. This 2nd book was released just after he died of lung cancer. I didn’t know what to expect of it when I got it but it was impressive just from a size and quality viewpoint. Most privately printed books do not approach this caliber. When I started reading it, I was even more pleased. He knew the subject, like few others, and his knowledge of turkey behavior was striking. I related it to my deer hunting and was immediately jealous that I did not bring that level of skill to it. He is one of those guys like Jim Corbett, or Montague Stevens, that see past what the rest of us see.
