A rockslide, Oct 23, near Bridal Veil Falls has closed Provo Canyon trail this afternoon! Last night’s heavy rain in Utah County likely contributed to this slide today. To our knowledge right now no one was hurt, but it was a close call for those in the area. @emersongalland / @sadie.galland and @this_is_spooner captured video of the actual slide and some of the aftermath! Portions of the Provo River Trail were significantly damaged along with some trees that were toppled over.
Rainfall can cause rockslides by adding weight to a slope, weakening the material holding rocks together, and reducing friction that keeps rocks from sliding downhill. It’s especially common in steep terrain, like the mountains around Utah – and today was a prime example of that.
