A whopper for lunch.

I was watching a Heron stalking something in the water for about 5 minutes when he/she made a strike. I started taking pictures over the next 6 minutes (24 in total) as the bird was having a difficult time with its meal. After successfully downing its quarry, it immediately started hunting again. These 5 pics are a Coles Notes version of the epic hunt. Absolutely fascinating to see.

That is a big eel.

Maybe not fast food but it sure is slippery food. I used live ones for bass bait. The learning curve on how to handle them was steep. If you didn’t hook them fast and get them in the water fast they would twist into knots and coat everything with a slime. Eel snot is amazing stuff. You had to pretty much start over and retie everything once it covered the terminal gear. I fished them for a couple of years before switching to another method. They worked like nothing else but they had downsides. Now stocks are endangered and it is hard to justify using them.

Eels are good eating. I was in a Chinese restaurant in Boston with live eels in a tank. I thought why not and ordered it. I saw a guy go over and fish one out. I was expecting it to be skinned but it came out steamed and just chopped in pieces. It wasn’t the most eye appealing thing but I ate it. I should have guessed the scenario after seeing lobster chopped in pieces in Chinese restaurants there.
