A common question people might have while visiting the tower is, “are there any other places like Devils Tower?” and the short answer is No! Devils Tower is the most beautiful, unique, majestic place in the universe!!! (totally unbiased) But the long answer is yes, well sort of.Although there is no place that looks quite like Devils Tower, many places share similar attributes that are associated with the Tower, such as the hexagonal columns that the tower is made up of called columnar jointing. Many places such as Devils Postpile in California and Sheep Eater Cliff in Yellowstone have columnar Jointing. But the closest examples are just 3.5 miles northwest of Bear Lodge, on private land. They are called the Little Missouri Buttes pictured here.
These four buttes are formed of the same type of rock as Devils Tower, phonolite porphyry. Some geologists think they were from the same intrusion of magma that created the Tower. There is even columnar jointing that can be seen on some parts of the buttes but can’t quite match the impressive look of Devils Tower.Next time you visit the Tower look out for the buttes, they are visible from the visitor center parking lot, but the best view is from the Towers summit which is where this photo was taken. A neat little story of Devils Tower in context I never heard before. Context is so often missing from icons.

Such a beautiful shot of the Tower surrounded by the Belle Fourche River by @jessebrownnelson Devils Tower Lodge
More context. One of the best pix I have seen of the tower. The other features in the above post are in the back.
