I have seen this before but never with this clarity. Ripley was at the peak of his powers in 1962 and it would be an unusual subject for him. He was better known for wingshooting scenes. Not many with the cash for paintings would bother with hare hunting, then or now. This scene clicks all kinds of buttons for me. The light, the snow, the figures, the beagles. It is all done so well. I love it.

Aiden Lassell Ripley (1896-1969) Four Grouse and Apples

Another Ripley at Copley This is a work up study I think I have seen before in some form. I don’t remember the finished version. Some of his studies were great.

As usual, open in new tabs to embiggen.

Happy 2024
