  1. Stephen…

    Thankyou for "Hounds".
I know of nothing more beautiful than a sighthound running after game.

Here (South-Eastern Australia) there are more fences and cover, so we – my friends and I – run staghounds and whippet-stags on flushed fox and rabbit. In daylight in winter, and at night on the wheat-stubble under spotlights. If it were legal, we would run kangaroos, which are super-abundant, with the traditional "kangaroo dog", a 30-32" smooth-coat staghound type.

I hunt all winter with a crew after Sambar deer , tough animals from Asia, more lime Elk than the smaller American deer but superbly adapted to heavy cover. Unlike Sam Baker, we can't use Deerhounds and must (legal requirement) stick to Harriers and Bloodhounds. The sound of a pack in full voice makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, and to hear them coming up a mountain gully to you makes you forget all those mornings standing in the winter rains listening to them run in the wrong direction. 🙂

But for visual beauty, give me sighthounds. Fur-seeking missiles, pouring on the coal.

    Thankyou again….. Peter.
