Courtesy of Reid,we learn that UC Boulder has banned costumes based on Indians, cowboys, “Mexicans” and– costumes?!– white trash.
Having spent time at the bar today after the week’s second funeral, I can only conclude that any image of me or my neighbors is now verboten. (Images NOT from today– we don’t take pics at funerals, but every one is a local friend).

Juan, one of our Spanish majority town’s three actual Mexicans, and a cowboy |
The ones above may not be what you think, (which individual above is ethnic Italian?) but the last three may especially confuse the taste police: John Paul Jones Apachito (an Alamo Navajo) impersonating an Irishman on St Paddy’s; Tyler Chavez, half Italian miner and raised ranch Mormon, now getting back his patronym “Scartaccini”, and his wife Kayla; Cody Henderson and Neal Harris– both half “Spanish” as we say here, but only Cody is considered “Hispanic”.
We as a society are more label- mad than white South Africans used to be, but not in “real integrated” Magdalena, thank God.
Oh– et moi, Boston ethnic cross who came here 30 very odd years ago…
Any students who are *actually* white trash must at least put on some dark-rimmed glasses or something.
Harold (3rd pic), our mechanic, who is usually black with oil, half- bearded, and hatless, came to the Spur Halloween party in a black suit, white dress shirt, subdued tie, and black wingtips, all borrowed. He shaved, put on dark shades, and won the first prize costume award– as a "Hollywood lawyer." Several people did not recognize him.
The "correct" term for the poor pale people is: Economically disadvantaged, melanin deprived, post-consumer non-recyclable, if you please.
….oh NO, Anon 10/26/2013, I beg to differ! There are all manner of subcultures in the "white trash" category, and to be politically correct, you have to distinguish between them! Being an Appalachian Hillbilly myself(often lumped into the general "white trash" category), I can assure you, we prefer(ahem!) the term "Southern Highland Americans"! A poor hillbilly should be referred to as a "financially CHALLENGED"(NOT "disadvantaged, which is too negative!) Southern Highland American. A "dirty hillbilly" should become a "soil enhanced Southern Highland American", and a "redneck" should be referred to as a "Cervically solar-enhanced ruralite", etc. etc. etc…..L.B.
Guess my "Over-sexualized Fly Fisherman" costume is out this year. Damn.

Sure do, Bill– my first apartment was there. Weren't you the last tenant of that basement roach farm that they dared call an apartment? 1968? Memories blur…
