The current official all-tackle world record for a mountain whitefish is 5 pounds, 8 ounces, caught by Albert Woo from the Elbow River near Calgary, Alberta, in 1995; however, in late 2021, Alex Dietz caught a larger 5-pound, 12-ounce fish in Oregon’s Deschutes River, which broke the state record and was submitted to the IGFA as a potential world record, though official world record status might still be pending confirmation.
The Elbow? I used to fish the Elbow from its mouth on the Bow in Calgary up to the dam. In summer it was a trickle so I assumed it was when flows were high but AI says Aug 1, 1995.
Funny enough I don’t remember much about whitefish in the 2 years I fished there. Maybe it was because they were more of a fly fishing fish.
Their adipose fin is much bigger than I thought.
