Halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, on a remote desert hillside somebody bolted a giant iron megaphone to the rocks. No trail, no sign, nothing pointing you to it.
It’s about eight feet of riveted metal, wedged between two boulders, aimed out over miles of empty desert. Building it took real work. Hauling it up there took more. And whoever did it never left a name.Nobody knows who made it. Nobody knows why. People have hiked out to find it for years, and the theories pile up, an art piece, some kind of sound experiment, a message meant for no one, but not a single person has ever stepped forward to claim it. It just sits out there in the silence, pointed at nothing.
So I drove out into the middle of nowhere to see it for myself, and put my hand on it.
A local lore story that is bizarre.
