David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.

About the earliest decent English fishing scene, I can remember seeing. Some of those old artists were painful but this is tranquil, at least. Coarse fishing vs the usual sport\game fishing. The class wars extend even to fishing. Steve comments on it in a sportsmans library and elsewhere.

Peder Mørk Mønsted (1859-1941). Danish realist painter. Evening lake view with an old man fishing, 1890

The best coarse fishing scene I have seen. Note the pipe.
