Large feral hog killed by jaguar in the Pantanal. Feral pigs have proven to be a net positive in this region as for decades they have served as the preferred game for hunters, reducing hunting pressure on native species and allowing them to increase in number. They’ve also become an important prey source for jaguars, who keep their numbers in check, proven by observations from local scientists: https://oncafarijaguarproject.wordpress.com/…/feral…/In the Iberá wetlands where jaguars are being reintroduced, feral hogs and capybara make up 90% of the diets of jaguars. This type of mid-to-large sized prey is perfect for a jaguar and provides enough meat to sustain them and allow them to grow big and stocky as a jaguar should. They also remove hunting pressure from endangered species currently being reintroduced like the smaller collared peccary and the endangered marsh deer. One could argue that due to their size, hogs are more suitable prey for jaguars than peccaries, so completely removing them from the environment may prove to be a net negative, especially as the jaguar population grows and the prey densities decrease.
