The Cottonwood seed hatch

A few days ago I fished with a guy who oversaw the stocking of white Amur (grass carp) into a lake in Arizona. The goal was to reduce Aquatic vegetation. Sterile triploid fish were introduced and a fish barrier put in place so they won’t spread.
The program is working great, and people love the grass carp. The fish are doing their job. It also created a unique angling opportunity which I was fortunate to encounter.
The Cottonwood seed hatch was on, and as the first breeze of the morning blew cottony puffs into the air the amur carp began to graze on the surface.
After a few fish maddeningly kissed and refused my fly, one slurped it down and I caught my first ever grass carp! This was an awesome experience that I’d love to try again. Drew Geving

  1. Poor man’s bone fish! I’ve only ever managed to hook one; it took almost all my backing and had me running the bank back and forth to get line back. Great fun!
