Tornado Season

One of the most famous tornado pictures in history was snapped on this day in 1989.

Marilee Thomas of Beaver City, Nebraska, took this picture of her daughter in front of a tornado in Furnas County. The tornado produced minor damage to farms, and the “tornado girl” photo went on to win second place in a national contest.  Chief Meteorologist Jamie Arnold-WMBF
Tis the season. There have already been many bad ones.
Shocking drone footage has revealed the devastation at a Florida solar farm after a tornado spawned by Hurricane Milton’s tore through its panels.
The storm’s ferocious winds tore through the Lake Placid Solar Power Plant in Highlands County, leaving 97 percent of the county without power in the immediate aftermath.
Incredible aerial footage by Duke Energy shows the extent of destruction to the $100 million facility that powers 12,000 homes.

The Andover tornado has a lot of good footage barely because it was clear at the base. I saw a video I can’t find now of it lit by the setting sun as it ripped through a high end subdivision with a pond in the foreground. Debris was hitting the pond, etc. Impressive.

A good descriptor on Facebook.

I was surprised tornados were common near Steve.

Having no experience with tornados it is hard to wrap my head around their power. The hurricanes here are a close match however. We had one a few years ago where I watched a 10X4 foot piece of sheet steel rip off the barn, fly across the yard, and hit the house. I thought the power mast would be gone but I got lucky. Also, many more pieces were scattered over the yard in the morning. I was stunned that other buildings and no vehicles were hit. Stupendous luck.

Drone footage adds another visual that is very dramatic.

The US has seen 710 tornado reports through April, more than the same period last year. ⁣

⁣⁣Mississippi and Illinois have seen the most so far in 2025.

I didn’t think they were that common. I don’t think there has ever been one here.
