A Neat Picture

Source

The Nahwitti (Kwakiutl) Village of Xwamdasbe on Hope Island, off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, showing houses with painted family crests. Photographed by Edward Dossetter, 1881.

I haven’t seen many like it. West coast natives seem less documented than they might be. I wonder how much is original culture in the pic? Did they use western tech, like lumber mills, to build the structures? Axes do doubt were used for some things.

  1. That’s a typical long house of the regional indigenous culture. Hand split cedar planks and roofed with hand split cedar shakes. Much easier to construct with iron/steel tools than stone tools but you can split cedar with hardwood wedges.
