“Rain Bombs” and Lightning

Rain Bombs is some kind of new term for microburst*, etc. The show does a very good job of explaining what they are.

Haboobs, derechos, microbursts are all covered and are related to the same phenomenon.

There was a microburst while I was at work in MA back in the 90s. Driving home I saw the aftermath and it made an impression I haven’t forgotten.

A few years ago I was on my land and looked down at the field. Everything was white and I thought, “What is this?” Within seconds there was a hurricane like blast and horizontal rain. It passed just as fast and was gone. I wish I had a good video of it. This kind of storm behavior didn’t occcur when I was a kid. Things are changing.

What Causes Lightning? The Answer Keeps Getting More Interesting.

A good lightning article. There is a lot more going on than was figured.

Lightning  used to be a few times in summer. Now it can be most any month.

*Microbursts and macrobursts are intense, localized downdrafts from thunderstorms (downbursts) that create straight-line wind damage. The primary difference is scale: a microburst impacts an area less than 2.5 miles (4 km) in diameter, while a macroburst covers an area larger than 2.5 miles.
