Russian Art

Let this one load all the way. The thing to look at is not the second rate Gorbatov imitations (the falconry one is almost a direct ripoff), but the still life pics at the bottom. I love the Russians but sometimes I don’t know quite what to say.. HT Chas

More Gorbatov

Al Gates just gave me this link to a huge gallery of Gorbatov art at his Eaglehunter site, including dogs, large mammals, and falconry. There is even a version of my “Lobo”.

“Pigeons” 2: New Gorbatov

At Al’s Eagle Hunter site is among other delights the biggest gallery of Vadim Gorbatov prints available on line. He has just added two new ones: Kublai Khan’s Hunting Trip and Frederic II’s Hunting Trip: I have a huge artist’s proof of the Kublai, but you can get a smaller version for pretty cheap, and …

A Vadim Gorbatov original

Lobo and Blanca from the recent Korean edition of Ernest Thompson Seton’s turn- of- the- last- century “Lobo”, about a cattle- killing wolf in New Mexico. At that time Vadim had not yet visited us, and in gratitude for our supplying background photos of our terrain, plants etc. he gave us this wonderful pen and …

The Ranch

We often speak of “The Ranch”– Lee Henderson’s acreage of miles of high desert grassland, canyon, and foothill, located on La Jencia Plain under the Magdalenas and not touching pavement on any side. It is an idael place to run dogs and fly falcons. I thought you might like to see a few pix. Here …

Bilibin

Artist friend Nance McManus sent me this wonderful image by the 20th century Russian artist Ivan Bilibin. I wasn’t aware of him, but there is a lot on Wiki here, including many wonderful paintings and other images. I won’t be owning one soon– Sotheby’s asking price for “The Hunt” was in the middle hundreds of …
